Music Hall Ballroom to Host the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra Wednesday, October 30, 2013 7-10pm to Benefit Public Radio
Classic big band music returns to one of its true Cincinnati homes on October 30, 2013 as WMKV 89.3FM and WLHS 89.9FM bring The One and Only Tommy Dorsey Orchestra to Music Hall Ballroom. The event will be a concert and dance that is emceed by the famous John Morris Russell with a large open dance floor. Tickets are currently on sale.
“We’re excited to bring this unique music to an historic location,” says WMKV Development Director Bob Hanneken, “Our goal is to preserve big band music, and if this has good attendance, there are some other big bands we’d love to bring in.”
The One and Only Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is the national touring big band that travels the U.S. They are appearing for the three-hour concert and dance to benefit public radio WMKV 89.3FM which is simulcast on 89.9FM WLHS. The stations offer big bands and standards, plus classic radio shows, and talk for seniors and families. Tickets for the concert are $30 per person and may be obtained by calling 513-621-2787, ordering on-line at www.cincinnatiarts.org, or at the Music Hall Box Office. Discount $3 parking is available for the October 30 event.
This is WMKV’s first effort to bring a big band to Music Hall ballroom. WMKV and WLHS have continued to present national touring orchestras, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Harry James Orchestra, and the Artie Shaw Orchestra, in recent years. The larger venue can accommodate enough audience so that WMKV can entertain the notion of bringing in possible future concerts with the Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras.
“This has been a great home for so many music events over the years, it’s a natural fit,” adds WMKV Station Director George Zahn, “This is classic big band music in a classic venue.”
WMKV is an independent public radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio, celebrating its 18th year of operation, and the only station in the country owned by a continuous care retirement community (CCRC), Maple Knoll Village, and serves as a mission-oriented feature of parent Maple Knoll Communities, Inc. The station has carved a niche as a local broadcast and worldwide-streaming audio leader for nostalgia including music (now oldies, standards, and big bands), classic radio comedy and drama, and information programs. The station can be heard at 89.3FM (now also simulcast on 89.9FM WLHS in Butler and warren Counties) and streams audio worldwide 24/7 at www.wmkvfm.org.
The 22,000 square-foot Music Hall Ballroom is Cincinnati’s largest event room outside of those in the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati. When it opened in January of 1928 on the second floor of the south wing of Music Hall, it quickly became the place to socialize and celebrate events and has hosted countless concerts, dances, and celebrations. Renovated in 1998, the Music Hall Ballroom features many art deco fixtures from the old RKO Albee, and how also hosts a Mighty Wurlitzer Organ which was once housed in the RKO Albee and later in the Emery Theater.
