Benefits of Exercise

Traditionally, fitness was thought to be only for the young, not for older people. But this attitude has changed over the past several years. Exercise is defined as the performance of activities that increase in intensity, frequency and or duration. These activities increase oxygenation to muscles and tissues and cause an improvement in cardiovascular fitness.

Some of the conditions associated with aging that can be improved with exercise, are impaired gait and balance, arthritis, type II diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension, osteoporosis, obesity, depression, muscle weakness and increased flexibility. Increasing fitness through exercise can make the difference between being independent in activities of daily living (ADL’s) and relying on a caregiver.
